Eric Redman joined the firm in 1983 and founded the firm’s Energy Practice Group. He practices complex commercial and administrative law, focusing on energy and environmental matters; public policy and legislative work; appellate practice and litigation. In recent years, his work has centered on new energy projects; new energy technologies; industry restructuring; and privatization, particularly in the power sector.

Experience

Mr. Redman has represented clients in a wide variety of commercial transactions and before state and federal regulatory agencies, before state legislatures and the Congress, and in state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Ninth, Fifth, and District of Columbia Circuits, the U.S. District Courts, the U.S. Claims Court, and the Washington State Supreme Court.

For years, he served as lead lawyer for the Northwest aluminum industry on electric power matters, and currently serves as lead lawyer for all types of electric utilities (investor-owned, municipal, and cooperative), power and gas marketers, end-users, energy technology companies, and independent power producers in a variety of power supply and rate matters, including: mergers and acquisitions; negotiating, drafting, and lobbying of the federal Northwest Power Act and other power sales and project statutes; representing clients on electric power industry restructuring and privatization matters; participating in development of new energy technologies; negotiating power sales contracts, bond resolutions, and related documents to secure financing of power generation and transmission projects.

Since 1988, Mr. Redman has led the firm’s representation of Alyeska Pipeline Service Company and the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) in a wide variety of matters.

He served as an aide to former U.S. Sen. Warren G. Magnuson (D.-Wash), and has written a best-selling book about Congress, The Dance of Legislation, as well as many articles on electric power, environmental issues, administrative law, and statutory interpretation. He is a former contributing editor of Rolling Stone magazine and writes for the Washington Post, the New York Times, Legal Affairs, Open Spaces, and other publications.

Mr. Redman serves as Trustee of the Thomas C. Wales Memorial Foundation, a Seattle-based foundation to support civic involvement and public service.  Mr. Redman is also President of the American Friends of Magdalen College (Oxford), and was appointed to serve on the Anchorage-Seattle Economic Cooperation Council by Seattle Mayor, Greg Nickels.
