REPRESENTING AIDS VICTIMS

Heller Ehrman lawyers work on an ongoing basis with the AIDS Legal Referral Panel of the Bar Association of San Francisco and through Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom. Our work includes the preparation of simple wills and powers of attorney, the representation of people with AIDS in Social Security Disability and SSI hearings, and cases regarding patients' duties to disclose HIV status to doctors.

CHALLENGING HOUSING ASSISTANCE DISCRIMINATION

In Moreau v. Kemp, Heller Ehrman along with National Gay Rights Advocates represented Housing for Independent People (HIP) and individual plaintiffs with AIDS in a challenge to a policy of the Department of Housing and Urban Development that prohibited the allocation of Section 202 funds under the Federal Banking Act to housing for people with AIDS and ARC. The District Court granted a restraining order in HIP's favor and the case settled with a release of funds to build housing for people with AIDS and ARC. HUD subsequently changed its policy to recognize people with AIDS and ARC as an eligible population for Section 202 housing.

TAX AND CORPORATE ASSISTANCE TO AIDS CAREGIVERS

Attorneys from Heller Ehrman provide tax and corporate counseling to the Caregivers Project, an organization that supports AIDS caregivers.
